Iceland Shuts Down First Website Ever Due to Content
It was the first time Iceland had to close a website down because of its content. Iceland has closed down a website believed to be used by the jihadist organisation ISIS, according to the authority responsible for the country's Internet domain name ".is."
Iceland has been at the forefront of the international debate on Internet freedom, with a strong file-sharing movement and laws prohibiting censorship.
Helgi Hrafn Gunnarsson, a member of parliament from the Pirate Party, which is opposed to Internet censorship, criticised the decision.
"The public has to have the right and opportunity to investigate and discuss openly the ugliest ideas found in human society, especially when we are talking about horror such as ISIS," he wrote on Facebook.
Iceland is ranked #1 in the world in terms of Internet freedom, more on that here.
